Henry looked through rows of dirty foul-stenched cells. Port Royal was beautiful, but it was constantly being ruined by these vermin. Pirates, Gypsies, anyone who didn't obey the law wound up here. He had been so close to bringing one of these in himself; if not for that foolish girl! Still, he would get his job done. Henry already lost his promotion and he didn't need to lose anything else. Lately however he began to question himself. What was the right thing to do? He's been trained to follow orders. No questions asked, do what you're told. Yet what of his friends? So many of them either retired or hated Lord Beckett. The young man didn't know what to do. He didn't know who to trust, who was good, who was bad.
Henry glared at a pirate who rudely called out. It was their fault he was so confused.

If there was thing that was required of him, that he felt was beneath his dignity to do, Gillette was confident to identify that as checking up on Marines and the sailors of the fort and town to ensure that they were doing what was required. It supposedly kept people on their toes, and focused on their duties, the idea that a superiour officer might show up at any moment. Of all the officers to show up, he knew that he was one of those they least preferred to see, with his tendency to verbally chew men out, and make life difficult for those who didn't preform to expectations.
It wasn't his fault that he was good at that, or that's what his temperament naturally suited him to, so it was unfair that he, alone, today found that as his duty. The Marines who were most likely to be found taking a lackadaisical approach to their jobs were either the grossly incompetent duo of Privates Murtogg and Mullroy, or whoever was assigned to watch of the fort's cells or prisons in town. By nature of being in town, many made the mistake of thinking that they would not be checked up on, or watched.
Not on his watch.
Gillette pushed the wooden door open, and pushed into the hot interior of the prison. Shade was typically pleasant in Port Royale, but whoever designed the prison had not done well enough to put in elements to keep out that sticky, stuffy feeling. Probably done deliberately to make the prisoners lose all hope.
"Ah, Mr Teagan. Come to slum it out with the unlucky few of the thriving criminal enterprises in Port Royale?"

Henry immediately turned around to find Gillette and quickly stood at attention to the superior. "No, sir." He probably felt like a fool now for being checked on by the Lieutenant, Henry always did as was to be expected of him. Or he tried to. He spent long hours going over his lost promotion lately not to mention recent events which he had been ordered by Lord Beckett to keep silent about. Whether Gillette came here to chew him out or not, he didn't know.
Henry was momentarily assigned to prison duties this morning and oh how he despised it.

"Very good," Gillette responded, walking past the almost-Lievtenant, looking over the physical conditions of the cells, to ensure their integrity. At one cell he stopped and grasped the lock, and gave a few good tugs to confirm that there was no threat of it coming loose without a key.
He ignored Henry's presence as he inspected the area. He'd long ago found out that ignoring the men who were being inspected, they tended to be uncomfortable and give themselves away if they had been neglecting their duties to some degree. If they had done everything properly, then they wouldn't fidget, and not give themselves away. Rather simple to follow.
At last he turned to observe Henry, glancing over his uniform, and hmphing, before he addressed the Midshipman.
"Well, your shoes could use some additional shine, but I can't say that there is anything other than that I can take issue with, Mr Teagan."
He pursed his lips.
"I would, however, like to address why you did not pass your examination. All I've heard is the gossip as to why you did not, and I'd like to know why it is you don't think you passed," he said, "when a midshipman is recommended for the examination, whether or not he passes is a reflection upon the judgement of the commanding officer. Our CO's judgement will now be in question further than it already has. However, I know you are more than capable of passing the examination, so, as I said, I want to know why you didn't."
Henry was getting chewed out...just not in the way any of the sentries would have.

{{FINALLY! @.@}}
Henry remained quiet and still all the while as Gillette inspected things here and there. He was used to being ignored by this routine. Then again, he was pretty much always ignored. As the Lt. Gillette finally turned to speak, he knew he would eventually be asked about failing his examination. Henry knew well what was expected of him. However, he had spent the last severl days analyzing this very question. 'Why did he fail? There was absolutely no reason for it!
However, he wasn't one to think rapidly, put other matters aside and focus on the task at hand. Now, how was he to answer Gillette? He might as well be honest about it. "I was distracted by fire ships, sir."

"Fire ships?" Gillette asked. As far as he knew that was never a topic that came up on the examination. Typically men were quizzed on navigation, shipboard matters, strategy (which was trouble if you had good reason to question standard strategy), fire ships were not all that common, as boats, even if not in proper condition, had other value to the fleet.
"That's a bit unorthodox," he said, finally, "but even though we don't typically use them here, I fail to see how you wouldn't be able to answer a question on that. It is rather basic knowledge."
If that was what threw Henry, then perhaps he was excessively nervous about the examination. It was normal to be nervous, but every once in a while you did get the midshipmen who couldn't take it, and who would faint like little girls when they had difficult coming up with the answer. Henry simply just wouldn't have been quite that nervous. If he had fainted, Gillette would have heard about it. Those were the stories that spread quickly.

Obviously he thought it was on the examination. Henry should have been a little more specific. "It wasn't a question," he stated, then proceeded to explain the situation. He had been aboard one of the Company ships when it happened. Tempers were short with the crew after they were put on half rations due to the lack of supplies. They were in Algeria at the time, quarantined on a smaller ship for two weeks with the crew, Henry used the time to study for his upcoming lieutenant's examination. None of the crew is stricken with the dreaded disease thank God, and they rejoin their ship just in time for the exam. During the actual oral exam, a fire ship was sent into shore.
Afterward, he had yet to find out how he was judged.

Gillette could not help but laugh when Teagan recounted what had happened up to and during the examination. He had thought that he had heard it all, but it was clearly more like excuses pupils give when trying to defend why an assignment wasn't done--there are constantly newer, cleverer, duller, and more fantastical excuses.
"I am sorry," Gillette said, still chuckling, "but I do believe that you must be due some award for the chances of such a thing occurring, granted higher where you were, is still nothing short of extraordinary. I do hope you took some time that day to gamble, for with your luck, you may well have made a killing."
He paused, "or lost everything, but still the luck!"
