[Joint post]

Alex pursed his lips and thought it best to remain silent for the moment. He noticed the hurt appear in her eyes before they flashed with anger.

Evy narrowed her eyes at her brother. "And you will continue to stay displeased. I wasn't prying. It's called teasing. Perhaps if you'd learn not to be so staid and proper, you'd understand." With that she turned her back to the two and crossed her arms. No matter, she'd soon be out of David's hair.

Pulling the letter out of the inside pocket of her coat, she read over the short note that had been delivered to her.

Follow the Duke of Bellamy and retrieve whatever information you can. By any means necessary.

The duke was known as a dangerous man. No one crossed him. Those who did came up missing. She had to figure out how to get close to him.

Alex stepped a few feet away and spoke quietly to David. "Did you have to be so harsh to her?" It was none of his affair, but both of them had been through quite a bit.

David didn't think Evelyn was teasing even though she stated otherwise. He said nothing in reply to his sister though, he still wasn't comfortable with this whole idea of her traipsing around and doing something so dangerous. As it was, Evelyn never did abide by society, in a way he understood why, however lately this was bit much for him.

When Alex spoke, he turned down the stairs and decided to leave the fort with him. David found no easy answer, though he was certain Alex understood how he felt on this. "... What is it you wanted to talk to me about?" he asked, deciding to leave the matter alone.

Realizing that David didn't wish to discuss it further, Alex gave a sympathetic look to Evy's back and followed David. He knew that David didn't approve of Evelyn being a spy. Alex knew the real reason why she'd become spy. He had a feeling that she probably hadn't told David why. It wasn't hos place though.

At his question, Alex said "Are you going to tell her that Jefferson's gone?" It would hurt her, but he knew that Evy would bounce back. She wasn't supposed to know that he'd been here. Of course, David didn't like Arthur so he wasn't sure if his friend would keep it secret or tell her.

Evy stood for a moment trying to think of a plan. First off, the duke wasn't in Port Royal. She needed to get home and pack and be on her way soon. Second, how was she going to play this? If it somehow leaked out that she was up to no good, she'd be a goner.

Pushing off the wall, she turned to leave the fort. She passed. Her brother and Alex, but she ignored them. She didn't feel up to talking to them right now. Especially David. He would never understand. There was no way she could make him see.

"Hey Briggs!"

Stopping, she turned to see who had called her name. With a smile, she waved. "Good afternoon Tony," she responded. Anthony, one of the many soldiers found at the fort, had befriended her not too long after his arrival here. He was loyal to James and couldn't stand Beckett. One of the many reasons she liked him.

"I heard you got Bellamy. That's going to be a tough nut to crack."

"I know, but all it takes is patience and time," she told him with a wink.

Laughing, he shook his head. "Well good luck," he said before walking away.

"Thanks," she called. With a shake of her own hea, she turned and left the fort.

"Of course not. We know absolutely nothing about him, therefore I'm still suspicious about this man. One good deed doesn't necessarily mean I'm about to trust so completely." David shook his head. "All this talk of the Company and recent chaos makes me not so sure about anyone just yet." He briefly stopped and looked at Alex with a rather weary look, almost like one reluctantly giving in. "Were this a completely different situation and time, I just may see my sister's point of view, perhaps I wouldn't be so harsh with her, however... these times just aren't what I had hoped they'd be."

Sighing, he added, "I can't help but worry about her. It's a brother's job to worry over his rebellious sister. I know I can't change her. She is who she wants to be, I only hope she knows what she's doing. As for this mysterious Mr. Jefferson, I'd rather learn more about him myself before letting him come to see my sister again."

"I know that, but perhaps you shouldn't be too hard on the man. He didn't have to save to Evy." He was glad that Jefferson had been there for her. No telling what David would have done if he'd received news that something had had happened to his sister. Alex nodded at David's statement about the chaos the Company had brought. "I have a feeling it will only get worse.

Gazing at David, he said quietly "Not what you hoped? Are you referring to the Company or the fact that your reunion with Evy wasn't what you expected?" Alexander could understand. He wouldn't be happy to find out that his only sister was a spy if the roles were reversed.

"I know you're doing your job as brother. You know you wouldn't change her. She wouldn't be the same Evy if you changed her. She knows, believe me. She only became a spy because of you." Had he just let that slip? "I understand about Jefferson. Going to use some of your contacts to find out?"

Outside the fort, she stopped and watched the people bustle hither and yon. She loved it here. This had been home for years. She was protecting these people. She loved her job. Evy was sorry that David didn't care for her job. It had been the only option open to her. She'd wanted desperately to find David and espionage was the only thing that allowed her to search for him.

She gave a sigh and set off down the road. There was no way she'd be able to make him see that she loved what she did. She loved David more, but it was wrong of him if he expected her to change. Why had this become so complicated? He wasn't happy with her. Had she done something? Perhaps she was in the way? Did he want her to leave? Evelyn felt a pang in her heart. Maybe that was what the problem was. She was holding him back.

With tear filled eyes, she stared at ground as she walked which left her open to the attack. She was lost in grief when a hand clamped over her mouth and strong arms banded around her, pinning her arms to her chest. She tried to scream, but the hand prevented anything much from escaping. Kicking, she connected with the persons shins and heard a grunt. She knew a man held her. She squirmed and fought, but the hold was strong.

David, she thought. She had to get back to the fort. She'd lost her hat and some of her hair hung in her face. She was about to fling her head back when something connected with her head. With a moan, her eyes rolled back and her world became black.

Out on the sidewalk, one of the kids of a vendor had noticed Evy. The boy had met her before and they'd talked. He liked her. She'd been nice. She had a pretty smile and she'd bought him a hat. He also knew her brother. He'd never met the man, but he'd seen the two together.

Knowing that they spent quite a lot of time at the fort, the boy took off running. Most of the people got out of his way, those who didn't, he went around. He had to get Mr. Briggs. He knew that he'd help Lady Evy, that was what he called her. She was wealthy and proper, but she was nice.

He soon reached the fort and he ran in calling "Mr. Briggs! Mr. Briggs!"
